Weekend Getaway

Happy Monday everyone! Our first weekend trip was in Barcelona, since we are staying in a little town outside of the big city we felt like we needed to experience all that it has to offer. And wow was it worth it... this past weekend was full of sight seeing, authentic restaurants, walking (lots and lots of walking), photography and coffee.

Saturday and Sunday morning we woke up ready to explore and conquer all of the "touristy" destinations; Casa Milà, La Sagrada Familia, El Triangle Centro (shopping), Platja De La Barcelona and The Carmel Bunkers. We strolled through the streets seeing coffee shops every corner as well as trying to get from one stop to the next by google maps!

La Sagrada Familia was one of my favorite locations, it is a large unfinished Roman Catholic church in Barcelona. The construction started March 19, 1882 and it still under construction. The work is directly financed by donations made by visitors and the public, which explains its slow construction progress. The Nativity scene and Crucifixion (stages of the cross) details were breath taking.

Platja De La Barcelona (beach) was just what we needed to end our Saturday evening! It was very lively with beach volleyball, picnics, tennis, bikers, roller blading and people just enjoying the ocean. We leisurely walked down the beach to a find little restaurant to enjoy dinner and the sunset.

Lastly, but not least was The Carmel Bunkers. Ansley, Emily, Margaux and I woke up early Sunday morning to catch the sunrise over the ocean. A little bit about the Bunkers is that they were built as anti-aircraft fortifications in 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, the bunkers atop the hill of Turó de la Rovira were situated so that they could see the entire city. The big cannons were mounted on the concrete to helped protect Barcelona from further bombing. After the war, the guns were removed and the bunkers were simply left to crumble. But the view from the site was too gorgeous to stay neglected so eventually the old bunkers became known as a beautiful place to over look the city.

Barcelona was a quick trip, but one I will cherish forever! This historical city is so unique and close to our hearts because it was our first stop of may trips to come on our
